This is part of a compensated campaign with Latina Mom Bloggers and Pampers.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

Pampers has placed baby pictures all over the US  to unveil their new Love Sleep & Play campaign, which celebrates the millions of ways babies uniquely experience love, sleep and play. Pampers understands that those experiences are unique and timeless, so who better to be in the spotlight and reveal the campaign than little ones themselves?

To honor these priceless love, sleep and play moments, Pampers hosted a special event on August 21st in New York City’s iconic Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal, which I had the privilege to attend. The historic site, which is celebrating “a century of arrivals” this year, was transformed as the littlest of arrivals (babies!) helped to unveil an amazing , user-generated baby photo experience

Throughout the last month, Pampers has rallied parents across the country to submit photos of their babies experiencing love, sleep or play to the Pampers Facebook page for the chance to be featured in their big celebration.  After receiving more than 30,000 photo submissions, Pampers compiled the images into a larger-than-life 3-D projection. Mother-to-be, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and actress and TV host, Jacqueline Bracamontes, were at the event to walk the “teal carpet” and help Pampers reveal the display while celebrating the millions of unique ways babies experience love, sleep and play.

I was amazed by the Projection and the gorgeous children’s pictures featured as in a larger than life Quilt, seamless sewn together to display the powerful message to us that night!

I had the joy of meeting and chatting with Jacqueline Bracamontes on the Teal Carpet!

I also had a chance to get closer to Jennifer love Hewitt and she greeted my son! He still talks about it! She was glowing and was extremely nice and courteous to all who interviewed her! I had a special place during the ceremony, right in front of her couch!

The party was perfect to the details and sealed the amazing initiative to celebrate children’s special moments! All attendees received a gorgeous diaper bag filled with amazing gifts which I had the honor to give to my Latina friend, Linda Cabrera – such perfect timing since she is due at any moment!

Amazed by the indescribable feeling of being graced with the opportunity to witness this special event and sharing this joy with one of my friends just crowned this amazing campaign I had the honor to be a part of!

Pampers Shines A Spotlight On How Kids Love, Sleep and Play!

PR_Logo 1This is part of a compensated campaign with Latina Mom Bloggers and Pampers.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

Every time I look at my son, I keep thinking how fast he is growing and I still remember the day when he came into this world and was handed to me as a miracle, a blessing! The complications with his delivery and facing the fact that I could no longer have kids, made raising him more than an act of love, it was my only opportunity to get it right! To give all I had to this little being.

We explored together the early days, the first bath, playtime, sleep through the night miracle, potty trained at 18months, so many milestones!

I still see myself going back in time and sitting on the floor and playing for hours, singing a Brazilian or Spanish lullaby for him to sleep. My endless hours chatting with him in as many languages as I speak, doodling a masterpiece, dancing away and playdates, so many park visits!

His favorite time was always bed time when I would lay by his side, read a story, sing him a song….he still asks me to read with him and sing together, it’s our unique bond! I know he will grow up and these memories will never leave him, memories that no matter how busy mom is, that she will always have time to Play and Love him, even when he is sleeping!

It totally translates Pampers new Campaign, Love, Sleep and Play and I’m so excited to share that for the first time in the brand’s history, Pampers is turning the spotlight on babies across North America to participate in the brand’s new Love Sleep & Play campaign.  The program pays tribute to the millions of ways babies uniquely experience love, sleep and play.  By visiting the Pampers Facebook page, parents can submit photos of their babies experiencing love, sleep or play for the opportunity to be part of a massive celebration event this August. Each week, every photo submitted will have an opportunity to appear on the Pampers Facebook page, in Pampers Twitter feed and in the brand’s special Love, Sleep & Play online gallery.  Plus, these photos have the opportunity to be featured in the brand’s celebration event in New York City next month. In joining the campaign, parents can celebrate all the special ways their babies experience love, sleep and play.

Check out the video below:

Pampers’ philosophy is recognizing the unique and joyful ways each baby delights in their own experiences, and embracing all the ways babies experience love, sleep and play. There are many kinds of love (whether it’s sibling love, parental love or love from their favorite teddy bear), different ways to sleep (whether it’s a planned nap, impromptu slumber or a night filled with the sweetest of dreams), and a  different types of play (whether it’s with a complex toy, a block or a simple box) – and Pampers celebrates and supports them all, that is why from the moment we brought our son home, Pampers was the only diaper brand we used.

Best Kids Apps to teach German- natürlich!

Continuing our series of post about apps to help teach children a foreign language or at least bring foreign language fun bilingual way! I looked for some apps to bring German Classic stories and some others just play time in German apps. I hope you enjoy my selection. I learned German when I was a teen and still have a deep love for the language! When I share that I speak German, everybody asks, why? It has been a language that has always fascinated me! Ausgezeichnet!

Flashcards Demo by Vimeo

This product has a great version for different languages and it can be downloaded here:

Flashcards by INKids. Flashcards for iPad contains hundreds of children’s flashcards in a number of learning categories and has 2nd language support in 4 languages (German, French, Italian and Spanish). Each interactive flashcard is beautifually illustrated and professionally recorded making this a must have educational apps for toddlers and preschoolers.

Kinder App

nbsp;

This fun vocabulary-building game manages to pack a lot of useful household words into five simple screens. The quirky, cartoony illustrations are lively and appealing. There are two levels of gameplay: in Level One, you touch objects in a room and their names pop up on screen, voiced aloud by a native German speaker. In Level 2, it’s your turn: the narrator names an object and you have to find it. To download, click here.

Despite the “Baby” in the name, this has proven an excellent choice for my 9 year old. (And right on down the line through younger kids as well.) The concept is simple: four pictures are shown on the screen, and a native German speaker names one of them for you to click. This is a basic flashcard vocabulary drill, executed with finesse and visual appeal.

I like the range of vocab in this app. Categories include: colors and shapes; numbers; alphabet (the format here is “A is forÄpfel” so you learn extra words along with the letter names); animals; and transportation.

Longlegs and the Pirate With No-Nose

Longlegs and the Pirate with No-Nose is an interactive book for kids, translated in six different languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese). This application amazing features are definitely in the story, has great illustrations, all product of the imagination of Francesco Tosi. But what will surely grab the little ones attention is the interactivity! The app allows you to touch, move, listen, live alongside the characters, and embark on a great adventure into the wonderful world of Calabi-Yau.

I hope you enjoyed the apps and have fun with your children! It’s all about having fun and exposing them to different languages and German is an amazing language which challenges little ones to produce sounds which are not native to English speakers or Spanish speakers!

Portuguese or Porcacheese??

porco

I went to teach Portuguese last week and I the 4 year old greeted me yelling, Mom, the Porcacheese teacher is here! LOL
I asked little john, after all our classes, let’s say the name of the language we are learning, he stopped me and answered: Portugues!
I said great, now tell me in English: he said Porcacheese! I told him Portuguese! He said, no gramma, said Porcacheese, when she was here…..and he would not let me say anything else.
What puzzles me, is that he is great with the language classes, but he insists with the term Porcacheese!
That brings me to thinking what is more important, the core of the language itself or details?? I have no doubt that John knows what Portuguese means, even though, he calls it Porcacheese, so I made a choice to ignore the detail and focus on the core of my teaching which is enable this child with all the tools to communicate with his family in Brazil, to help him understand culture, food, comic books, songs his mom heard when she was little and help him love every minute of it!
I made a choice to keep him engaged and having fun, instead of insisting on something which is not really important in the target language learning process, which might cause irreparable damage to our teacher/student relationship and all for what?
I embraced Porcacheese and even came home and taught my son, told my parents, another story among all the amazing stories my students help me collect as precious memories of my teaching best moments! The best lesson was that language is not static, it evolves and children are active subjects while learning a foreign language, while their brain is trying to make sense of the new grammar, the new sounds, the new arrangement and new rules! Thankfully all that is translated into a fun experience in programs like ours! Let your child create, let them make up new words, let them learn!

+                                                                                                         Porc + cheese = Porcacheese! A new word is formed!

Holiday Activities with a Bilingual Twist

The Holidays are coming and you are wondering how to celebrate the holidays and keep the bilingual traditions alive? Your children take a foreign language but you don’t know how to keep the flame burning during the holiday break??? They watch Dora and love Spanish but you want more? I have the answers for you!

Traditions are easy to create, to keep! I wanted to share some of my traditions and some traditions from Latin Countries!

Gifts in shoes – I keep the American tradition of putting gifts in our stocks but also put gifts in brand new shoes outside my son’s door, and he finds them early on Christmas morning! Fun way to bring new sleepers or new shoes without having the children complain, shoes again??   🙂

Caroling – I have plenty of cds and music around the house to teach my son holiday songs in Portuguese and Spanish! Our Favorites are Jingle Bells, Oh Christmas Tree, Frosty and some originals like Botei meu sapatinho in Portuguese! If you would like to listen or show your children some of our videos, please search on youtube for EZLearn Languages.

I posted my favorite one!

We are lucky enough my husband plays the guitar so on Christmas eve, we sit and sing for hours!

Gift Giving – The tradition in the US is to open gifts Christmas day, but in South America, we open them on Christmas Eve and actually there is not much celebration on the 25th, than a day off! So I let my son open one gift and remind him why, there is only one box under the tree for him, waiting from the Portuguese Santa! Papai Noel!

Food – Why not add some spice to your holiday meal or brunch?

I always cook Brazilian Food the night before or add a table of appetizers Christmas day to spice up our holiday traditions! We also have a side dish and a dessert! Among my favorites are the chicken salad with avocado or the rice with raisins and the farofa (cassava flour), great additions to your table! My favorite appetizers are: salgadinho de queijo, empanadas, olive and cheese bites, sanduiche em camadas  (layered sandwich) and sweets like pannetonni, brigadeiros, casadinhos. I also love to add the fatia de parida (a Brazilian version of french toast), a large fruit plate, lunch meats and fresh Portuguese bread, are great additions to muffins, eggs and breakfast casseroles!

I included some recipes for Brigadeiro:

Great Reading – I have been bad in bringing foreign language books and help my son be more proficient but I try to include Brazilian stories during our holiday break, I also have Brazilian comic books which we read together! Many book stores have bilingual books, Foreign Language books in different languages!

I wanted to share some:

Crafts:

We make snowflakes by making random cuts in a folded square

Build paper figurines and make origamis (my son favorite thing to do!)

We make a new year list of places and things we want to do and I keep it all year and check when we actually do it!

I hope my suggestions will help you bring latin flavor to your holidays! You can adapt our suggestions to traditions in your own country or language! No matter what, it needs to bring fun and joy to the children!

Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Feliz Natal, Fröhliche Weihnachten, Merry Christmas is Sheng Dan Kuai Le(Traditional: 聖誕快樂; Simplified: 圣诞快乐) in Chinese.

A Daddy’s Tips On Babies

Huggies Diapers

You’ve  probably heard many various tips from mothers and and grandmothers on how to deal with babies, right?

Well for this post, a daddy will let us know some of his tips for dealing with babies on a day to day basis! And where else would I look except to my husband … Mark? My husband, as a way of introduction, has two sons and is a few years older than I am. So he should have lots of wisdom when dealing with babies, right? You know, the older… the wiser?  😉

So I asked my baby’s daddy if he had any tips he’d like to share with my readers and here is what he offered up as tips for new moms and dads when dealing with the everyday mess and stress of having a baby in your house!

1.  Moms – don’t put the baby in bed with you!
Many times the baby will cry at night and after a long exhausting day of dealing with the precious little one, it’s very tempting to put the baby in bed with you when he starts crying. This is bad for a couple reasons. The first is that it’s dangerous for the baby’s health. You could roll over at night and accidentally suffocate the baby … this has unfortunately happened and often you’ll hear about it in the news. The second reason is that it can become a habit and it will then interfere with mommy and daddy’s “special times.” Every couple needs to have intimacy (not just the physical part) and trying to be quiet while dealing with a sleeping baby in your bed will certainly impede the two of you from having those “special times”.

2. Dads – try to help your wife with the baby anyway you can.

A)   Night-time: Most moms I know are quite capable of taking care of their baby, but after a long tiring day they’ll usually want some help. Try helping with the feeding of the baby, especially at night. If mommy isn’t breast feeding, you can help warm the bottle and maybe even feed your child while you let your partner get some well-deserved rest.

B) Any time: One of the worst jobs I’ve found when dealing with my babies was changing the diapers! It’s a stinky smelly mess.
*Side Note* My first wife thought that she would be green and save the world by using cloth diapers. But after the first load had to be washed and sanitized, she quickly changed her mind!   🙂
A more reasonable approach and  the one that we used was using disposable diapers. And Dads, it’s not that bad of a job, just make sure you have lots of baby wipes handy.  Just grab the baby’s legs, lift him up a little while you wipe and clean him, slide the new diaper under the butt, close it with the velcro tab and you’re good to go! Put your used dirty wipes in the old diaper and then fold it up and use the velcro strips on it to hold it closed and you’re ready to dispose of it.

Taking a walk with the baby can be very relaxing and help with stress management – Dads can do this to further help their wife out by giving her a break. (Just don’t go popping too many wheelies with the carriage as this WILL get the baby upset! )  😉

Finally, just give your baby lots of love and reassurance. He needs his daddy’s love as well as his mommy’s and this will help your child to grow up having a happy healthy life!

Well there you have it – My husband’s tips for dealing with babies.
